GOING DARK: JULIA EBNER
Radicals have taken to technology, exploiting the gap between what society forbids and what the internet allows. For two years Julia Ebner went undercover, investigating the online lives of extremists; hanging out in the alt-right networks; receiving advice from Jihadi brides; and hacking lessons from ISIS to deliver the alarming book Going Dark: The Secret Social Lives of Extremists which has recently won an Austrian Science Book of the Year prize. By day Ebner – recently listed in Forbes Austria’s 30 Under30 – works at the London-based counterextremism think tank the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, and is a consultant on counter-terrorism to the UN. She is also the author of the 2018 Bruno Kreisky award-winning The Rage: The Vicious Circle of Islamist and Far-Right Extremism. She explains how extremists operate, and how to stop them, in conversation with Charlotte Graham-McLay.
